VALENCE AND DETERMINACY AS PARAMETERES OF ETHNIC IDENTITY

Abstract: currently the issue of ethnic identity is one of the most actively developed in ethnic psychology. This fact results from several reasons. First af all, it is the need of modern society for psychological protection which comes against the backdrop of a large number of stressful factors of a political, social and economic nature. The other reason is the reaction to actively developing processes of globalization as an attempt to preserve not only the cultural heritage of the ethnos, but also all stable forms of the people’s existence, formed over the centuries and millennia: linguistic, ideological and others.

Ethnic identity as a field of scientific research is characterized by diversity, complex structure and certain dynamism. Besides, here one might add a large number of socio-psychological concepts, which serve as a basis for the theoretical study of the ethnic identity issue. This, in the author’s view, can cause certain contradictions in different studies.

This article details the properties and characteristics of the valence and certainty of ethnic identity, which contributes to a deeper and clearer understanding of the phenomenon of this type of identity.

The results of the study can serve as a theoretical basis for development of diagnostic methods designed to identify the level of tolerance and stability in a multiethnic space.
